about
‘Houses’ rails against the crises of homelessness, dereliction and emigration in Ireland. These issues have affected cities, towns and villages across the country.
Housing in Ireland is broken. Finding somewhere to live is famously difficult, yet walking around any city or town reveals plenty of empty properties. These buildings could be homes or community spaces. Instead, they reflect social decay and pose a danger to passers-by as they fall down.
When National Youth Council of Ireland reports 70% of young people are considering emigrating for a better life, we ask: who will be left when all we have is dust?
lyrics
Get out of school
Head into town
But cross the road before you pass that house
Because the tiles are coming down
They skitter and hit
The footpath with a crash
And no-one's gonna do a thing about it
So you'd better watch your back
Because the houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
The houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
A city street
Ten houses on the block
One too expensive to buy or rent and
Nine left there to rot
Unhoused people sleeping
In front of homes nobody lives in
'Cause someone wants to hold the asset
And somebody else lets them
And now the houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
The houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
Nowhere for art
Nowhere to dance
Nothing to see but office blocks
And hotels, lifeless and grand
You don't want to go
But there's nowhere to stay
You don't even have a chance
To stop the decay
Because the houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
The houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
Falling down, coming down [x4]
The houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
The houses are falling down all around me
The houses are coming down all around me
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
Who will be left when all we have is dust?
Who will be left?
